After finishing The Farseer trilogy (, OK, this is the last time that Hobb appears on my list, so relax, the Hobb lovefest is over, though if you have ever read any of her books you will see why I rate her work so highly!
Ender’s Game is certainly one of the most popular science fiction novels ever written, and for good reason. Gwynne isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty, bloody his axe, cleave bone, tear flesh and characters will die. They're not "Lord of the Rings" or "Game of Thrones," I suppose, but they are a lot of fun. Twenty Must-read Finished Fantasy Epics – An Introduction to the Genre. Taking place in the Forgotten Realms setting of Dungeons & Dragons fame, this trilogy first introduced readers to one of the best loved fantasy characters of all time, the dark elf Drizzt Do’Urden. The first book is decent but slow and the second one is fantastic but once I read the third it’s over so I’ve been putting it off.
Anyhow that is my completely long winded story of how I found out about Mark Lawrence and apparently have been listed for a coveted ARC that I didn’t know about.
I’ll check ’em out. Dumbed down fare for the Yanks. Near the end of King of Assassins, the last book in the trilogy you still don’t know how Barker will conclude his trilogy and with a low page count left the story could still go in any number of different directions. Jemisin (which is by all accounts a stunning literary work). They are eminently re-readable, buzzing along at a healthy speed and filled with moments of thrills, sadness, and exuberance. A quick mention also to Chade, another top character. But you don’t have to read the others in I just figured I’d ask? Both Jalan and Snorri grow so much during the trilogy, that at the end, yes, they are both still recognisable as the characters you met pages ago at the beginning of Prince of Fools (Book 1) but they have developed so much and traits from each other have rubbed off on them both, Snorri is still Snorri but Jalan by the end has some redeeming qualities about him to. The books apparently get better but I dunno how anyone can get to them!
Take Gandalf’s encounter with the Witch King inside the gates of Minas Tirith: In rode the Lord of the Nazgûl, under the archway that no enemy ever yet had passed, and all fled before his face. The Silmarillion technically doesn’t belong here, but I must note that it is also a tremendous bit of storytelling in a different style. Sadly, you did not include Jill Williamson’s Award Winning Trilogy: By Darkness Hid, To Darkness Fled and From Darkness Won. Wolfe’s story is compelling, but unorthodox. Thank you! And, you also have Regal Farseer, every trilogy/series needs a villain (think Joffrey in Game of Thrones) and Regal is that villain, you will hate him by the end and will be praying that he gets what he so thoroughly deserves. He is not in the same conversation with the top writers of Adult Fantasy. This absorbing and powerful tale boasts an original concept, an interesting plot, a well crafted world, and developed believable characters. Either way, Tolkien’s famed trilogy holds a special place in my heart. I’ve read the first five books myself, but as Goodkind got worse and worse, I just had to give up when he started building characters as cannon fodder. Some amazing selections a d most I haven’t read before. Thank you – fantastic post!! The pacing of the series—especially in the first two books—is strange, as the narrative meanders about, touching on seemingly inconsequential events and glossing over (or leaving out entirely) big action scenes. It really is wonderful. The Black Company is a rollicking good time, interspersed with creepy demons and eldritch castles, mad wizards and the horrifying conditions of besieged cities. I think it gets overlooked because it’s by Hickman and Weiss, Dragonlance authors, but it’s one of the most imaginative series in fantasy going with a great cast of characters.
Smith Spark has a very unique way of writing and writes with a mixture of richly detailed sentences that gently caress you with her words and short and snappy sentences that are sharp, harsh and like a bark. It’s a fascinating look at all of the implications of the way this magic works. Because apparently this guy is like mega huge. Martin, made reading Martin’s work anticlimactic for me. But further He is someone whose demeanour belies the depth to him as a character.
Mysteries are explored and revelations abound, remaining satisfying and surprising despite how logical they are. Okay so my brother is obsessed with Robin Hobb so the Live Ship traders have been on my radar for a long time, but this has really convinced me to bump her up the list! So, like anything worth doing/learning yourself, there’s a steep learning curve. he had a kingly crown; and yet upon no head visible was it set. The Tawny Man trilogy takes place fifteen years after the end of The Farseer trilogy and we are once again reunited with our old friends, Fitz, Fool/Lord Golden (I wonder what he was up to during the gap between trilogies), Chade, Nighteyes and many more. What would you add to the list? I noticed the imprint putting it out and emailed them and they said they’d send me a copy when it was available.
He literally tells you key pieces of the plot that will STILL tear your heart out when they happen. There are plentiful moments of dread and of fear for the fate of the characters where you curse Gwynne for the seemingly unending torment, torture and hell that he puts the characters through. It’s grimdark, but not for the sake of being grimdark. Donaldson’s clever introduction explodes in the second installment, Forbidden Knowledge. I get tired of falling in love with a world or character only to have the adventure end all too abruptly for me. I also have another post with my five favourite finished fantasy series that you can find – !!HERE!! Meh! ( Log Out / It can get pretty tough to read at points. Legends that echo, that reverberate, that are laced with meaning and that, if you have read The Faithful and the Fallen series will have you nodding, smiling away at yourself and whispering the immortal battle cry of ‘, There’s a strength to Gwynne’s writing and a conviction that flows through his words as he concludes his powerfully told tale of good vs evil and he is a phenomenal storyteller. On the surface it is a story about good vs evil but, it is so much more and there is a depth to the story and to the characters involved that transcends ‘good vs evil‘ and makes the story so much more. After I started reading again and got into fantasy Mark Lawrence’s Broken Empire trilogy was one of my favourite trilogies out there and I loved Jorg Ancrath, he was so different to any character that I had read before.
My favorite part of Wolfe’s work is his writing, though. I saw something that looked like The Wheel of Time and jumped in with both feet. All the New Horror and Genre-Bending Books Arriving in October! He’s captivating and he’s someone that you love to hate. I agree you can’t just read them all at the same time , Definitely worth continuing, both other trilogies are fantastic.. Reading Malazan before G.R.R. Hobb again manages to create another completely different set of characters with another great story and for those who have read The Farseer trilogy before, well you will get more out of this trilogy with a certain character and that’s all I’m saying! After finishing The Farseer trilogy (I read all three trilogies straight after each other) I had every intention of missing this one out and jumping straight into The Tawny Man trilogy to get back to Fitz’s story, however someone I know had been reading Hobb to and they told me that this series was worth a look. Despite that, it’s an incredible story, well-written, with some of the most complex and layered characters in science fiction. I have only read The Lord of The Rings from here (to my shame). Mistborn is amazing and gets better in the second and third books.
Well we have Michael Moorcocks “Elric” series which stands as one of the MOST groundbreaking ever in introducing a archetypal antihero protagonist in Elric with his black vampiric demonic soul sucking blade stormbringer. My Latest Book Haul. This sweeping epic tells the tale of Marla Wolfblade, sister to the corrupt and perverted High Prince of Hythria. It is arguable, by the way, that Mistborn is not done. She also keeps a personal blog of book reviews (various genres), and other assorted ramblings (some of which are actually coherent). In a fiercely patriarchal society, Marla must leave behind her naïve adolescence and quickly learn the infamous rules of gaining and wielding power if she is to have a say in her future and protect those she loves.
