That’s because some of them immigrated to the United States prior to the events that take place in the movie. But in spite of all this, I Remember Mama is one of the most sweetly uplifting pictures of its era. The film brought back many memories of the stories his mother told of growing up in a country where the children spoke English and the parents were learning the language in order to work and make a decent living and provide an education for their kids. In this film, all the cast members pulled off an excellent performance! Just as he did in "Alice Adams", he captured the small things in family life that break your heart or make you laugh. The more time passes and the more inundated we become with the raunchy, violent, frenetic world around us, the more amazing this film becomes. I Remember Mama came out of RKO when that studio was in its darkest phase, and most of its output was creepy little horrors and thrillers, under the guidance of Dore Schary, who a few years after this would add a streak of gritty realism to MGM's dream world.
"I Remember Mama" would be worth watching for this episode alone, but virtually every other element in the film is of the same high caliber. The effects of one’s actions is a very important message in I Remember Mama. However, there were times when I found it difficult to understand what they were trying to say. Even though most of the story revolves around Mama and Aunt Trina gets her own subplot, Aunt Jenny and Aunt Sigrid aren’t given much to do within the story. I won't rehash the marvelous moments already documented here (though that scene of the boy smoking, the window shutting, the girls going in and out of rooms, the rejection letter, etc., is utterly brilliant). The family unity and commitment to one another in the movie was heart wrenching. Video and sound quality is very good. The writing, the cast, and the characters make relatively commonplace events seem significant and interesting, the episodic style works very well, and the story-telling is well done. When Uncle Chris went...boy, it was hard to keep that facewater from flowing! The story is universal, not just about a Norwegian family in turn of the 20th Century San Francisco. Often amusing, often contemplative, and always enjoyable, "I Remember Mama" is about as good as any movie ever made about family life. A perfect example is when Katrin begins to narrate her story. Instead, her performance compliments the other performers. It should be required watching by both children and adults on Mother's Day. Anyone who has had a loving mother has got to be moved by this story, a film directed for the ages by George Stevens. Today when I go to the classroom-- I will tell them to see I Remember Mama. You … I wonder if children who watch this movie might more appreciate what lenght parents go to in order to make their children's lives better. At one point Greta Garbo was considered as Mama, and even Marlene Dietrich sought the role.
